USA forward Aron Johannsson to miss 6-8 weeks after ankle surgery

U.S. men's national team forward Aron Johannsson will miss the next 6-8 weeks after ankle surgery, his club, AZ Alkmaar, announced on Friday. 

Johannsson played in just one game during the World Cup, coming on as a substitute for the injured Jozy Altidore in the USA's 2-1 win over Ghana in the opening game of Group G play. It is not clear if the ankle injury prevented him from being a substitute or starter in the ensuing games or how much it limited him in Brazil.

​Jurgen Klinsmann turned to Chris Wondolowski and Julian Green off the bench in the USA's 2-1 loss to Belgium, with Wondolowski missing a would-be winner from close range at the end of regulation and Green scoring in the 107th minute to bring the USA back within a goal.

Johannsson's surgery could force him out of contention for the USA's next match, a Sept. 2 friendly in Prague against the Czech Republic. 

AZ Alkmaar's season begins Aug. 9. Johannsson, who signed a contract extension with the club through 2018 this past spring, is coming off a season in which he scored 26 goals in all competitions.
