According to a report by NBC Sports’ Joe Prince-Wright, American defensive midfielder/defender Geoff Cameron is expected to depart Stoke City before the end of August. Prince-Wright has reported that Cameron’s contract has a $9.5 million buyout clause, although its unclear whether Stoke would be willing to sell him for less.
The 33-year-old Cameron has been a fixture in the Potters’ starting lineup since the 2012-2013 season. Over the course of six seasons, he made 168 Premier League appearances and was key in helping the team stay in the Premier League (until last season in which Stoke was relegated).
Cameron has been searching for a new club since Stoke’s relegation to the EFL Championship. He has been linked with several European sides such as Danish team Odense BK, Werder Bremen, and newly promoted La Liga club Rayo Vallecano.
In recent years, Cameron has primarily played as a defensive midfielder, but he began his career as a centerback for the Houston Dynamo. From 2008-2012, Cameron starred for Houston becoming a multi-time MLS All-Star and guiding the club to the 2011 MLS Cup Final.
A United States Men’s National Team regular from 2012-2017, Cameron has earned 55 caps and scored 4 international goals. He was a starter in both the 2014 World Cup as well as the 2016 Copa America Centenario.
