Geoff Cameron signs permanent deal with Queens Park Rangers

Queens Park Rangers announced the signing of Geoff Cameron to a one-year deal, with the contract including an option for a second season. The American midfielder-defender spent last season on loan at the EFL Championship club, making 19 appearances. According to the Evening Standard, he had one year left on his deal with Stoke City, but the club “was willing to let him go for free if they could reach a financial settlement.”

“It’s great to be back,” Cameron told QPR’s official website. “I really enjoyed my time here last year. It’s a family-oriented environment and this move is the best fit for myself and my family.”

QPR is in desperate need of stability, having experienced a steady decline following a brief stay in the Premier League in 2013-2014. Last season, the club finished in 19th place in the second division, three spots ahead of the relegation zone. As noted by Joe Prince-Wright for NBC Sports, the Hoops have been on a torrid reduced rate signing spree, despite dealing with “a seriously restricted financial situation” that followed their Premier League relegation in 2015.

Cameron earned 55 caps with the United States Men’s National Team, but hasn’t made an appearance since September of 2017. At 34 years old and following some harsh criticism of the national team program, his international career is likely over barring an extreme player shortage or an near unprecedented resurgence. However, it is impressive that he continues to contribute in a relatively top league, despite being at an age when many players have taken a step down or retired.
