Chicharito Delivers Mexico to Copa America Quarter-Finals

Mexico defeated Jamaica before more than 80,000 fans and will now face Venezuela on Monday.

MATCH SUMMERY : Mexico vs. Jamaica 2-0

Javier Hernandez “Chicharito” secured a win for Mexico Thursday night against Jamaica scoring an early goal while his substitute Oribe Peralta scored a late goal in the second half, delivering their national team to the Copa America quarter-finals.

Chicharito’s goal came at the 18th minute with an exceptional header sending Mexico fans into a major celebration. Meanwhile, after a tense second half as Jamaica pushed for at least a tie, Peralta scored in the 81st minute guaranteeing a clear win for Mexico.

Mexico advanced from their group along with Venezuela, which beat Uruguay earlier. Mexico and Venezuela will meet Monday in Houston.

Jamaica were eliminated while going scoreless in its second straight Copa America match despite pressing throughout the night.

Mexico has been in red hot form lately, having won 20 consecutive international matches. It had a great 3-1 victory over Uruguay in its first game and will be hoping that it can easily take care of the Jamaican team that is currently ranked 46 in the world, Mexico is ranked 16.

The teams last met in the CONCACAF Gold Cup Final where Mexico won 3-1.

But Mexico defender Miguel Layun insisted that past results mean little before tonight's game, “I think we have to be aware that Jamaica has different characteristics than Uruguay and they'll try to take advantage of that.”

Jamaica will be without defender Kemar Lawrence who will miss the rest of the Copa America after injuring his groin in Jamaica's loss to Venezuela. Jamaica will also be hoping that its captain, Wes Morgan, will be well enough to play.

Mexico midfielder Andres Guardado will miss the game after receiving a red card against Uruguay.

Mexico has a 16 win 2 draw and 2 loss history against Jamaica. It will be the first ever Copa America match between the two.
