Atlético Madrid keeper may return to parent club
‘Since 2011 I have only been in London for my medical’

Thibaut Courtois, Atlético Madrid’s goalkeeper who is on loan from Chelsea, admits he has “no emotional attachment” to the London club.

The Belgian signed for Chelsea in 2011 on a five-year deal but was immediately loaned to the Spanish side where he has stood out as one of the best keepers in La Liga ever since and helped his side win the title this term as well as reach Saturday’s Champions League final.

The 22-year-old may return to Stamford Bridge next season but faces competition from long-term No1 Petr Cech and admits he has only been to London once.

“The fans and my team-mates have not seen me as a player being on loan there,” he told Sport-Bild. “I have no emotional attachment to Chelsea. They did sign me for €9m in 2011 but since then I have only been in London for my medical.

“Chelsea didn’t want to loan me out last summer either. But I wanted to stay in Madrid. And this summer it will go on again and it will be even harder to find a solution.”
