No room for Lodeiro, Valverde as Uruguay announces World Cup squad

Seattle Sounders midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro was among three players cut from Oscar Tabarez's 26-man provisional Uruguay squad.

La Celeste announced their official 23-man squad on Saturday, with Lodeiro, Sampdoria's Gaston Ramirez, and Real Madrid youngster Federico Valverde missing out on the trip to Russia.

Valverde, 19, won the Silver Ball at the 2017 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, and had a promising spell at Deportivo this season on loan from Real Madrid, making 23 La Liga appearances.

Unsurprisingly, the attack will be led by veteran goal-scorers Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez, while Tabarez's backline also boasts plenty of experience in Europe's top leagues with Atletico pairing Diego Godin and Jose Maria Gimenez.

Uruguay kicks off its World Cup on June 15 against Egypt. Here's a glance at Tabarez's 23-man squad:
