World Cup 2018: Senegal star Idrissa Gueye’s nonchalant defending criticised for Colombia’s winner that knocked out African side

Everton midfielder barely moved a muscle as he leaned on the front post with hand on hip watching the ball fly past him

SENEGAL'S Idrissa Gueye left fans baffled with his defending for Colombia's World Cup winner.

Yerry Mina headed the crucial goal from a corner to knock the African side out of the tournament.

But it could have easily been prevented if Everton's Gueye was paying attention.

Leaning on the front post, the midfielder couldn't have looked more nonchalant if he tried with his hand on hip.

As Mina meets the cross, the 28-year-old barely moved a muscle as the keeper scrambles across his line in vain attempts to make the save.

Had Gueye been on his toes, he could have salvaged Senegal's World Cup dream.

With Colombia topping the group, they finished level on points with Japan with the exact same goal difference.

It then boiled down to fair play with Japan receiving less bookings during the three matches.

To makes matters worse for Gueye, he was one of the players responsible for picking up a yellow in the opening game to Poland.

Viewers were left stunned and took to Twitter to share their thoughts on his defending.

Colombia celebrate their goal against Senegal in the World Cup in style

One joked: "Man was on a cig break" while another wrote: "Someone told him to look after the post and that's what he did."

Colombia's win means they will now face England in the round of 16 following the Three Lions' 1-0 defeat against Belgium.

If Gareth Southgate's side progress it sets up a favourable quarter-final clash with either Sweden or Switzerland.
