World Cup 2018: Mesut Ozil admits he’ll ‘need time to get over it’ after under performing in Germany’s tournament humiliation

MESUT OZIL has spoken out for the first time since Germany's World Cup humiliation.

The Arsenal playmaker received heavy criticism for his performances as the defending champions crashed out in the group stages.

A 2-0 defeat to South Korea left them rock bottom of Group F after registering just one win.

Ozil started the opening defeat against Mexico but was dropped for their last gasp 2-1 victory over table toppers Sweden.

And the No10 has finally broken his silence claiming he'll "need time to get over it."

Taking to Instagram he wrote: "Having to leave the World Cup after the group stage hurts so much.

"We just weren't good enough. I'll need some time to get over it."

Supporters singled out Ozil and Sami Khedira as players that particularly disappointed in Russia.

Ozil clashed with a group of fans with one being held back by security as they vented their anger at the £350,000-a-week Emirates star.

And under fire boss Joachim Low also admitted Ozil's performances were a major disappointment.

Germany fans blame Mesut Ozil for early World Cup 2018 exit

He said: "Because of a number of bans and injuries, we had to make changes,

"In 2014 and 2017 that was also the case, it happens.

"A team only begins to gel later at the tournament, so it makes sense to bring some [players] in and let it go easy on them.

"It wasn’t only Ozil, a number of other players didn’t perform as they normally would. I take responsibility for that and stand up for that, but I thought it was a good team."
