BREAKING: Villarreal reach agreement for Spanish defender Álvaro González

It seems the defender dilemma has finally come to an end at El Madrigal just a day before the transfer window closes. Local Castellón newspaper El Mediterráneo claims Villarreal have reached a “principle in agreement” for the transfer of Espanyol central defender Álvaro González.

El Mediterráneo suggest that the agreement between all three parties involved is definitive with a few details still to be resolved, and the official announcement could be done later this afternoon.

Álvaro González counts with vast experience under his belt having make his debut with his hometown team of Racing de Santader in May 2011 under the tutelage of former Villarreal manager Marcelino García Toral. Álvaro would suffer the anguish of being relegated at the end of the 2012 season with Racing. Subsequently he moved to Real Zaragoza suffering the same ill fated destiny at the end of the 2013 season after Los Maños got relegated. Just a year later he moved once again to the Ciudad Condal with RCD Espanyol on a 5 year contract.

Álvaro was involved in 38 matches during last season with Espanyol. This season he has featured in both 2 matches that Espanyol has played with a balance of 8 goals conceded so far...

Among his main accomplishments has been obtaining the 2013 U-21 UEFA Championship in Israel with the Spanish national team under current manager Julen Loptegui. Álvaro spent most of the tournament on the bench.

Honestly, I would not expect Espanyol to keep doing business with Villarreal after all the noise they made about Bailly but who cares at this point.

We have made successful business with them in the past, obviously Bailly turned out a shrewd signing for us and became Villarreal’s most profitable sale in the history of the club after his £30 million move to Manchester United.

Here’s to hoping that Álvaro turns as half as good as Bailly. He certainly deserves the benefit of the doubt. Remember Víctor Ruiz also emerged at Espanyol, and he wasn’t touted as the next big thing as Bailly was, but with enough confidence Ruiz also turned out a remarkable signing for the Submarine after his ill fated spell at Valencia.
