England had allowed only one goal in four World Cup matches before Saturday, but it was forced to come from behind Saturday after allowing Leicy Santos’s opener in the 44th minute. Lauren Hemp equalized just before halftime, and Alessia Russo put the Lionesses ahead in the 63rd minute.
Colombia was the biggest underdog remaining in the tournament field, but it had already stunned one European power, eliminating Germany in the final match of the group stage. Its bid to oust another fell just short.
The semifinals begin Tuesday, when Spain faces Sweden in Auckland, New Zealand. England will play Australia, which outlasted France in penalty kicks earlier Saturday, on Wednesday in Sydney. Find the bracket and full knockout round schedule here.
